SC is a long-established condition, first described by Thomas Sydenham in 1686. In rheumatic chorea or Sydenham's chorea (SC), the abnormal movements may merge imperceptibly into purposeful or semi-purposeful acts, sometimes making the chorea hard to identify. Chorea may also be seen with Huntington's disease and as a complication of medication (levodopa, anticonvulsants, antipsychotics).

Sydenham's chorea, also known as chorea minor and historically and occasionally referred to as St Vitus' dance, is a disorder characterized by rapid, uncoordinated jerking movements primarily affecting the face, hands and feet.

Sydenham's chorea is a rare but important movement disorder often related to Group A streptococcus and rheumatic fever. The incidence of rheumatic fever has been decreasing in North America but continues to be much more prevalent in developing countries as well as immigrant populations. Background: Sydenham's chorea (SC), the neurologic manifestation of rheumatic fever, remains the most prevalent form of chorea in children. Suggested treatments of chorea in SC include prophylactic penicillin, symptomatic (antipsychotic and anticonvulsant) medications, and immunomodulatory therapy (steroids, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), and plasma exchange).
